U.S. Surgeon General Vivek Murthy.
U.S. Surgeon General Vivek Murthy admitted on Wednesday that cannabis use can be beneficial for certain medical conditions and symptoms, the first time in the nation’s history that a sitting Surgeon General has acknolwedge cannabis as a legitimate medicine.
“We have some preliminary data showing that for certain medical conditions and symptoms that marijuana can be helpful,” Surgeon General Vivek Murthy told CBS News.
Murthy goes on to say that she believes this data should be the driving force in lawmakers determining future policies for cannabis; “I think we have to use that data to drive policymaking, and I’m very interested to see where that data takes us,” he said.
Murthy took over as Surgeon General on December 18th, 2014. At 37 years old, Murthy is the 19th Surgeon General of the United States.
