The Coalition to Regulate Marijuana says it’s collected over 170,000 signatures to put their cannabis legalization initiative to a vote in Nevada. The group plans to submit the signature’s to the Clark County Clerk’s office on Wednesday.
Once the clerk’s office verifies that at least 102,000 of the 170,000 signatures are valid (from registered Nevada voters), the proposal will go before the state’s Legislature, which will have the option of passing the measure into law, or sending it to a vote of the people in 2016. If approved into law, the proposal would allow everyone 21 and older in Nevada to possess and use up to an ounce of cannabis, and they’d be able to purchase it from state-licensed cannabis retail outlets.
According to polling released last year by Public Policy Polling, 54% of Nevada voters support legalizing cannabis.
